The Alexandria Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies every day. Prevention is taught in schools, at public events and at speaking engagements. Preparations take place with training for CPR, first aid and more. Volunteers are called to the scene of emergencies to give food, clothing, shelter and comfort to all people who are affected by disasters.
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
The fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. Learn more about our fundamental principles by visiting the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The Alexandria Red Cross is the oldest Red Cross chapter in the state of Virginia. The Alexandria Chapter has been providing vital community services since February 24, 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Chapter's charter. As a member of the American National Red Cross, the Alexandria Chapter responds in times of emergency and assists in national and international relief efforts.
