Mission & Vision

The Mission

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

The Vision

The Alexandria Chapter of the American Red Cross Mission

Caring, Educating, Responding….Locally

The Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement:

Humanity:
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.

Impartiality:
It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

Neutrality:
In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

Independence:
The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement.

Voluntary Service:
It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

Unity:
There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

Universality:
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.

About Us

Mrs. Esther Dashiell Taylor Burke, co-founder of the Alexandria Chapter

The Alexandria Chapter is the oldest chapter of the American Red Cross in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It has a long history of serving the Alexandria community during wartime, peacetime and times of disease epidemics.

The volunteers and staff are committed to meeting the humanitarian needs of the people of Alexandria, be it in disaster preparedness, disaster response, first aid and CPR training, or disease prevention. The chapter also has youth programs, after school programs and special services for isolated seniors.

The chapter is most ably lead by a strong board of directors who volunteer their time to assure the fiscal soundness of the operations and that the services expected of the Red Cross are the services delivered. They oversee the operations of the staff composed of 8 full-time and 8 part-time employees.

The services delivered are funded entirely by charitable donations and grants. No government funds are received. Each year the chapter hosts the Waterfront Festival in Oronoco Bay Park to raise funds for the chapter. Approximately 1500 volunteers make the 3-day festival an annual tradition in Alexandria.

There are numerous volunteer opportunities for all ages. Toddlers accompany their parents on visits to senior citizens and long-time volunteers who are themselves senior citizens continue to find rewarding work with the Red Cross in Alexandria. Our community is diverse and likewise our cadre of volunteers. Classes and services are offered in multiple languages. Of the 70 volunteers in the Friendly Visitor program alone, 19 speak a language in addition to English.

The Alexandria Chapter is proud of its history in this most historic town. And we are also proud of the swiftness with which we can respond to the emerging needs of the Alexandria Community.

Chapter History

The American Red Cross was formed in 1881 by Clara Barton and a group of supporters. For the first 20 years, the focus of the American Red Cross was largely disaster relief, a concept that Miss Barton introduced to other national Red Cross societies.

More details about the history of the American Red Cross can be found at www.redcross.org.

The history of the Alexandria Chapter goes back to 1916, when the Chapter was founded. During times when our country has been at war, the Chapter has gathered supplies for comfort kits that were distributed to members of the U.S. armed forces and to war refugees. During peacetime, the Chapter could focus more on contemporary community needs. Over the years, the Chapter’s services have evolved within the guidelines of the Fundamental Principles to meet our local community’s immediate and anticipated needs.

Today, the Chapter can be thought of as two groups of services that fulfill the Red Cross mission in this community and two pillars of support. The Office of Emergency Services meets the emergency needs of Alexandrians, including disaster relief and recovery, emergency communication, international tracing and communications services, and our transportation program.

This office also recruits and trains Alexandrians for Red Cross disaster relief services, then sends these volunteers around the country to help at Red Cross disaster relief operations such as the Texas Floods, and of course, the Pentagon Relief Operation of September 11, 2001.

The Office of Health and Safety Services offers classes to businesses and residents that teach members of our community how to respond to life-threatening emergencies. The most popular courses are those regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, Lifeguard training, and facts about HIV and AIDS. Health and Safety Services also offers Workplace Training programs as well as Babysitter’s Training and Pet First Aid.   Furthermore, the Chapter provides First Aid Team coverage at a variety of special events in the city of Alexandria.

We also offer a variety of youth programs as well as programs for our senior population.

Courses

The American Red Cross has been providing Health and
Safety education for more than a century. Red Cross training
programs range from first aid, CPR and AED to swimming
and life guarding; from HIV/AIDS education to care giving
programs like Babysitter’s Training.  American Red Cross
programs help people live safer and healthier lives. The Red
Cross constantly strives to respond to the health and safety
concerns of Americans at home, in school and in the
workplace. Today’s innovative programs also include
teaching lay persons and professionals how to use
automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to save victims of
sudden cardiac arrest.

Last year, the Alexandria Chapter trained over 9,000 people in lifesaving skills. We invite you to join this growing number of people who are prepared to respond an emergency.
